Protocol assessments were conducted weekly in the first month and biweekly in the second month. Our own research group recently conducted a first open label study evaluating the acute efficacy of mirtazapine for decreasing the depressive alcohols effects on the brain symptoms and the level of drinking of persons with comorbid MDD/AUD. The results of that study demonstrated robust within-group efficacy for mirtazapine for decreasing both the level of depressive symptoms and the level of alcohol consumption of that comorbid population (Cornelius et al., 2012). However, no placebo control group was utilized in that study, so the efficacy of mirtazapine versus placebo could not be assessed.
